{"id":4039,"date":"2021-06-29T13:56:15","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T11:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visitbuggiano.com\/the-nuns-of-buggiano\/"},"modified":"2021-07-07T15:22:29","modified_gmt":"2021-07-07T13:22:29","slug":"the-nuns-of-buggiano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/visitbuggiano.com\/en\/the-nuns-of-buggiano\/","title":{"rendered":"The nuns of Buggiano"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Walking through the stone streets of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/visitbuggiano.com\/en\/buggiano-castello\/\">Buggiano Castello<\/a><\/strong>, history leaves traces of itself at every corner and is surrounded, as in an embrace, by the beautiful countryside.<\/p>\n\n<p>Within the closed walls of the castles have found quiet and isolation monks and Benedictine nuns.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The monastic communities of Buggiano<\/h2>\n\n<p>The presence of <strong>female monasticism<\/strong> has been strong over the centuries, as in the <em><strong>Monastery of Santa Marta<\/strong><\/em> in Borgo a Buggiano, or in the <strong><em>Monastery of Santa Scolastica<\/em><\/strong> in Buggiano Castello.<br\/>These religious communities had a very specific social role: they dealt with charity, artistic commissioning, but even more important they <strong>assisted the needy and managed education<\/strong>.<br\/>More and more families from the Renaissance pushed the entry into the convent of daughters, not only for the religious fervor from which they were pervaded, but for a much more earthly matter of prestige in the community and for the tax exemption of the sums paid as a dowry at the time of entry into the convent.<\/p>\n\n<p>Most of the monasteries in the area followed the <strong>abbreviated rule of San Benedetto<\/strong>, where rigor sometimes left room for moments of celebration, especially with the passing of the centuries and the relaxation of restrictive rules aimed at punishing the body even with fasting.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food culture<\/h3>\n\n<p>The <strong>culture of food<\/strong> has increasingly taken root thanks to the consideration of the body as a &#8220;temple to be protected&#8221; also through nutritious, healthy and why not, tasty foods!<br\/>In the eighteenth century were made real parties <strong>for the &#8220;<em>dressing<\/em>&#8221; of the girls<\/strong>.<br\/>On these occasions importance was given to food and wine and the nuns of the place had the reputation of being skilled cooks.<br\/>Although many ingredients were bought outside the monastery, many others came directly from domestic productions.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The convents were in fact equipped with vegetable gardens for the cultivation of herbs, fruits and flowers according to the tradition of &#8216;Hortus Conclusus.<\/strong> The space inside the garden was divided into 4 zones:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>vegetables garden<\/li><li>orchards (pomaria)<\/li><li>gardens with trees (viridaria)<\/li><li>herbaria<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Walking through the stone streets of Buggiano Castello, history leaves traces of itself at every corner and is surrounded, as in an embrace, by the beautiful countryside.
